Film
crew: Film the
entire process, documentary style. Film in
class labs as well. Take still digital photos
of the entire process. Edit the footage to
create a news show documenting the study. Two
students in each of my classes will
take on this job.
Macroinvertebrate
Sampling group: Three
students in each class will
work with the Benthic Index of Biological
Integrity by collecting samples of bugs that
will be sent to a lab. We will get to keep
one sample to study and classify the bugs
ourselves. On the Hood Canal field trips,
this group will collect samples of bugs and
count them themselves to generate the index
of biological integrity.
Water kit
crew: Two groups
of kids from each class will conduct water
quality tests such as dissolved oxygen and
pH (2
to 3 students from each class),
Nitrates and Phosphates (2
to 3 students from each class)
by direct
titrations.
We also have a new Hach Advanced
Water Quality kit that I got with
Learn & Serve funds. From this kit we will
have students conduct calcium and total hardness
as well as dissolved oxygen
and pH (the
more teams we have doing these the better because
we can check each other's results) (2
to 3 students from each class for each of these
kits).
Water probes
crew: Some kids
will be using the Palm IIIc handheld computer
or the TI-73 calculator with Vernier
probes to conduct dissolved
oxygen
and pH (2
students from each class),
temperature and flow rate (2
students from each class),
and turbidity and conductivity (2
students from each class).
Coliform
Bacteria: Some
students will test the water for the presence
of e-coli or coliform bacteria (2
to 3 students from each class).
