Summary:

In this class students learn the World Wide Web (WWW) language, HTML. HTML is the code necessary to publish material on the WWW. Students will gain a preliminary understanding of the internet and how it works. They will be able to code their own ideas to create web pages, add color, pictures and even sounds. Once they have a web site, each student will be given a free email account to publish their home page on the WWW. With their new skills, Adv Tech students will lend their ideas in the creation of a Chimacum Middle School web page which they will be responsible to upkeep. Due to the sensitive nature of this class (email priveleges and published material on the web) students must be absolutely, 100% trustworthy. Also, students must learn the ethics involved in publishing on the web as they will deal with issues of copyright, web sites with useless content, safety, privacy, and equity. All these issues will be discussed in class.

Prerequisites:

Adv Tech students should know all the basics of using a Mac, meaning that they can turn on their computer, use the apple menu to start netscape, be able to go into the hard drive to open simpletext (or any other word processor), know how to save documents onto the hard drive and then be able to open them at a later date, know how to use internet search engines, and be able to problem solve little computer glitches that arise from time to time. They should also have confidence when trying out new software. More importantly than all of the aforementioned, each student should have a desire to learn how to hard code HTML and make and publish web pages on the WWW!

Added bonus:

This year's ThinkQuest contest is open to kids age 12 to 19. Kids have until February of 1999 to form teams and come up with an idea for an educational web site. They then have the rest of the year to make it. Winning sites can earn anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000 in scholarships for each kid in the team!
