Harry Potter, J. K. Rowling

After starting this page I noticed that a source I used, the Harry Potter Lexicon, actually grew into an amazing place for anything Harry Potter. Besides, I got way too busy to work on The Order of the Phoenix and I'm only half way through The Half-Blood Prince. I never got to compare The Prisoner of Azkhaban movie to the book but I'm very happy to hear that they are making The Goblet of Fire movie! With the same actors! And those same actors will most likely start working on The Order of the Phoenix movie, too!!

Year 1: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

  1. The Boy Who Lived
    1. Intro to the family, esp the Dursley's. One year old baby Harry is placed at their doorstep.
  2. The Vanishing Glass
    1. Ten years later we see that poor Harry has a miserable existence and that his cousin Dudley is a fat, spoiled-rotten kid. A few differences than in the movie, first Dudley goes with a friend and really didn't want Harry to go. Harry had had many instances of strange happenings that he didn't know was normal for a wizard. We learn that Harry never gets anything, they always either forget his birthday entirely or give him mismatched, used socks. The only clothes he has are Dudley's huge hand me downs. Second difference was that Dudley didn't get caught inside the snake tank.
  3. The Letters from No One
    1. Hogwarts letters arrive. Difference, Harry gets to sleep in one of Dudley's rooms (his broken toys room) because the letters are addressed correctly, cupboard under the stairs. The rest was pretty much as in the movie. (Second movie starts correctly, with Harry in that room, not under the stairs.)
  4. The Keeper of the Keys
    1. They all meet Hagrid who lets Harry know he's a wizard, that his parents were wizards and did not die in a car crash, and that he's going to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. He also gives Harry a birthday cake. Hagrid spends the night and tells Harry most of the story of his scar and his parents death at the hands of Voldemort. The movie was pretty accurate otherwise.
  5. Diagon Alley
    1. An owl delivers a newspaper to Harry when he awakens the next day and Hagrid asks Harry to pay it. Never seen in the movie, esp the paying part. They made their way to London, muggle way, to get to Diagon Alley. Hagrid admits he'd love to have dragon (as in the deleted scene). The rest is much as in the movie, except that as Harry gets fitted for a robe, he meets a kid. Draco Malfoy! Harry didn't like him from the beginning. Also, he asks Hagrid about Quidditch. The wand choosing is also different in the book. Much more dramatic in the movie when the wand wasn't the right one. In the book, nothing happened!
  6. The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-quarters
    1. Difference, after the shopping for school supplies Harry still had to spend a month with the Dursley's! And Harry had to ask his Uncle for a ride to the train station! The bit with Hagrid never happened. The rest of the movie scene was pretty accurate, except the twins first noticed that he was Harry Potter and there was a lot more dialogue between the Weasley's and their mum.
  7. The Sorting Hat
    1. The ghosts actually came into the scene a lot sooner in the book and the best, most playful ghost was left out of the movie completely, Peeves the Poltergeist. That was a huge mistake. In the book it was Seamus who asked Nick why he was Nearly Headless. And they had to sing the school song before bed after dinner.
  8. The Potions Master
    1. The stairs moving was taking what the book said a bit generously. In the book the stairs did do strange things, but moving like that was way off. Snape's class was pretty good in the movie, only it was worse in the book. They meet with Hagrid for tea and read about the Gringotts break-in.
  9. The Midnight Duel
    1. Flying lesson was pretty good in the movie, only they took a lot of liberty with Neville's flight. In the book, Neville only lifted off about twenty feet high, slipped and fell (to break his wrist). Harry's catching of the remembrall was pretty accurate, but they did embellish a bit. And when McGonagall took Harry to see Wood, she took him out of Flitwick's class, not Quirelll's.
    2. Not in the movie is the midnight duel that Malfoy challenges Harry to. Hermione tries desperately to stop them from getting caught and losing points. So far, they both dislike Hermione cause she's so forward and in their business. They run into Neville who was sent back from the hospital wing and forgot his password. They almost get caught cause Malfoy set them up. So it was with Hermoine and Neville that Ron and Harry hide safely in the room with Fluffy.
  10. Halloween
    1. Harry gets his Nimbus 2000 (it was from McGonagall). Wood explains Quidditch to Harry as he gets his first practice. The levitating feather lesson was pretty accurate in the movie, except that Seamus only set fire to his feather, it didn't blow up. The troll bit was pretty accurate too. This is when Hermione becomes their friend.
  11. Quidditch
    1. They notice Snape limping, Snape takes a library book about quidditch from Harry. When Harry visits Snape to get it back, he finds Filch bandaging his wound and hears Snape say, 'How can you keep your eyes on all three heads at once.'
    2. Harry's first snitch chase ends up with a foul by Slytherin. The rest was very much as in the movie.
    3. At the end of this chapter, Hagrid lets out the name of Nicolas Flamel.
  12. The Mirror of Erised
    1. Christmas was pretty accurate in the movie with the invisibility cloak and the restricted section of the library to research Flamel, and the screaming book and of course, the mirror. The deleted scene where Ron tries to get Harry to do something besides think of the mirror is pretty accurate. Then Dumbledore's scene with Harry and the mirror is good too in the movie.
  13. Nicolas Flamel
    1. The deleted scence where Neville gets cursed by Malfoy is in the beginning of this chapter. This is also where Harry sees Flamel's name on Dumbledore's card. In this chapter, left out of the movie, Gyffindor plays Hufflepuff with Snape as referee. Harry gets the snitch the fastest ever of a quidditch match while Ron kicks Malfoy's butt and Neville takes on Crabbe and Goyle.
    2. Later after the match Harry flies over the forbidden forest following Snape. He sees Snape talk to Quirrel.
  14. Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback
    1. The Hagrid's dragon in his hut scene was almost perfect, but Malfoy and them didn't get caught! In the book, they decide to send Norbert to Charlie in Romania so that Hagrid doesn't get caught. Ron was bit by Norbert and had to eventually go to Madame Pomphrey. He was stuck there when Charlie's friends came for Norbert at midnight. Malfoy found out by reading Charlie's note and got caught by McGonagall, given detention and 20 points from Slytherin. Harry and Hermione saw this from under the invisibility cloak with the dragon in a crate. As they headed back down, Filch caught them (they left the invisibility cloak)!
  15. The Forbidden Forest
    1. Neville also got caught looking for them to tell them Malfoy knew. Since they couldn't tell the truth about the dragon, Neville felt they betrayed him by telling him a lie. Yes, they lost 150 points, 50 each. Life was miserable for them for losing so many points.
    2. They did serve detention in the forest with Hagrid, although Ron was really Neville. Otherwise, the movie was okay. There were other centaurs and a lot more happening in the book, though. Oh and Harry got his cloak back. Anonymously with a note: Just in case.
  16. Through the Trapdoor
    1. Harry's scar begins to hurt. Harry remembers to ask Hagrid about Norbert and find out that he did give away how to get past Fluffy. And then they find out Dumbledore's gone!
    2. Getting to the stone was a bit like in the movie. They all help get past the traps. The potions one was the only one left out of the movie. It happened after the chess game, past the troll that was already knocked out, and it was Hermione who did that one, too.
  17. The Man with Two Faces
    1. Harry finds Quirrell as in the movie although the fight with Quirrel/Voldemort was a bit different in the book. In the book, Harry doesn't turn Quirrel to dust when he touches his face (they did that in the movie for dramatic effect). Also in the book, after Harry loses consciousness, Quirrel goes to him to finish him off and Voldemort tries to get the stone. It's Dumbledore who saves Harry.

Year 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

1. The Worst Birthday

a. Uncle’s dinner party with prospective client. Harry’s continued bad treatment by Dursley’s. During dinner party Harry was to pretend not to exist, yet it was his b-day. No cards, presents, or anything. Up until here, the movie is accurate.
Dudley makes fun of Harry, Harry pretends to do magic and gets in big trouble. Aunt has Harry clean windows and do yard work all day. In evening, Harry gets bread and cheese cause good food is for dinner party. None of this happened in the movie.

2. Dobby’s Warning
a. As Harry is supposed to be non-existent, he gets a visit from a house-elf, Dobby. Dobby comes only to warn Harry but ruins everything by making a huge ruckus. What Harry doesn’t know is that Dobby will do anything to keep Harry from going back to Hogwarts. He’s even been keeping all of Harry’s posts from Ron and Hermione. Dobby was downright evil by getting Harry into huge trouble to keep him from going to Hogwarts. Dobby is the Malfoy’s house-elf and he heard stuff but he couldn’t say what. Uncle V was so mad. Dobby’s incident with the pudding got Harry in trouble for using magic, and Uncle V read the letter saying so. So Uncle V barred Harry’s windows, locked him in his room and threatened to never let him go back to Hogwarts. This entire part was done excellently and accurately in the movie.

3. The Burrow
a. But Ron appears at Harry’s window in a flying car with his twin brothers. Ron asked why Harry didn’t answer his letters. Ron’s dad heard about Harry doing magic, so Ron came to check it out. They broke the bars with the car, got Harry’s stuff and got him into the car just as Uncle V was grabbing his ankles trying to keep him in. They flew back to the Weasley’s. Only difference in the movie was that Ron’s dad didn’t hear anything about Harry doing any magic, Ron and the twins just came to rescue Harry. And in the movie, Uncle V fell on some bushes as Harry got away from his ankle grip.

4. At Flourish and Blotts
a. [From here on, I use the following resource: The Harry Potter Lexicon]
b. In which Harry and the Weasleys receive their required book lists from Hogwarts and go to Diagon Alley via Floo Powder. Here Harry arrives in Knockturn Alley, overhears the Malfoys, is found by Hagrid, meets author/teacher Gilderoy Lockhart and Arthur Weasley and Lucius Malfoy come to blows. This part is pretty accurate in the movie except that at Knockturn Alley, Harry didn’t overhear the Malfoy’s.

Chapter 5 – The Whomping Willow
In which the entire Weasley family and Harry cram into the Ford Anglia and drive to the Station but Harry and Ron cannot get through to the train and decide to fly the car to Hogwarts. The trip is uneventful until the end when they lose power and crash into the Whomping Willow. In the movie, the trip to Hogwarts was pretty eventful and dramatic. Everything else was very accurate.

Chapter 6 – Gilderoy Lockhart
In which Ron receives a howler, they learn about mandrakes in Herbology, Colin Creevey asks for an autographed photo, Lockhart is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and they learn about Cornish Pixies. This was very well done in the movie. Excellent actor chosen to play Gilderoy Lockhart!

Chapter 7 – Mudbloods and Murmurs
In which Harry begins Quidditch practice, words are exchanged with the Slytherin team, Ron’s spell backfires, Harry and Ron serve detention and Harry hears a voice. Movie was right on.

Chapter 8 – The Deathday Party
In which Harry is caught dripping mud on the carpet by Filch, is taken to Filch’s office, Discovers Filch is not a wizard and Nearly Headless Nick invites him to his Deathday Party which HRH attend on Hallowe’en night. Leaving the party Harry hears voices again and following the sound with Ron and Hermione discover writing on the wall and a petrified Mrs Norris. The whole getting caught by Filch and the deathday party were completely left out of the movie. But HRH did find a Petrified Mrs. Norris and they all get caught by Filch who is very mad at them and hates Harry.

Chapter 9 – The Writing on the Wall
In which HRH are questioned about the petrified cat, Hermione asks about the Chamber of Secrets, they return to the scene of the crime, consult Moaning Myrtle and puzzle about the mystery. This was very well done in the movie.

Chapter 10 – The Rogue Bludger
In which a note from Lockhart gets HRH into the restricted section of the library and a book on making Polyjuice Potion. In the movie, there was no such note. Hermione just gets this book in the regular part of the library. At the Quidditch match a rogue bludger chases Harry, breaks his arm but does not stop him from getting the snitch. Lockhart’s attempt to heal Harry removes the bones from his arm. Madame Pomfrey begins to heal him, Dobby pays a visit and Colin Creevey is petrified. The rest is done superbly in the movie. The quidditch match was spectacular with Harry and Draco fighting it out for the snitch.

Chapter 11 – The Dueling Club
In which Harry is cured, goes looking for Ron and Hermione in the girl’s toilet where they are brewing the Polyjuice Potion, Hermione steals the ingredients from Snape’s office when Harry creates a diversion in class. Pretty accurate in the movie except that they leave out the whole part of how Hermione gets the ingredients (no diversion in class by Harry and no stealing by Hermione). A duelling club is started by Lockhart and Snape during which Harry learns he is a Parselmouth when a snake is conjured up by Malfoy. Rumours fly to suggest Harry is responsible for the attacks on students, a rumour which is strengthened when he stumbles on the bodies of Justin and Nearly-Headless Nick. The rest here is excellently accurate in the movie.

Chapter 12 – The Polyjuice Potion
In which Harry is hauled before Dumbledore, witnesses the phoenix burn and learns Dumbledore does not suspect him of wrongdoing. Christmas day, presents are opened, the Polyjuice Potion is ready, Crabbe and Goyle are drugged and hair stolen and the potion drunk by HRH. Disguised as Crabbe and Goyle, Ron and Harry quiz Draco Malfoy and find he has nothing to do with the Secret Chamber. Upon returning to the girls’ toilet they find Hermione has taken on cat features. This was all excellently and accurately done in the movie.

Chapter 13 – The Very Secret Diary
In which Myrtle’s toilet floods, Harry finds Tom Riddle’s diary which he shows to a now fur-free Hermione, they begin a search to discover who the owner was. Lockhart stages a Valentine’s party complete with dwarfs as cupids. That night Harry learns the secret of the diary, goes back in time and discovers it was Hagrid who first opened the Chamber of Secrets. All except the valentine’s day party was in the movie.

Chapter 14 – Cornelius Fudge
In which HRH decide not to confront Hagrid as time passes and there are no more attacks. Students chose their courses for the next year, Quidditch practice becomes more frequent, Harry returns to his dormitory to find his belongings ransacked and the diary gone. So far, only the students choosing courses for next year and more Quidditch practices are not clear or left out of the movie. Harry hears the voice again, Hermione runs to the library and Gryffindor’s match with Hufflepuff is cancelled when Hermione and another girl are attacked. Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff match was cancelled in the movie because Hermione was attacked, no other girl was attacked. Harry and Ron visit Hagrid and overhear a conversation between Dumbledore and Fudge and Lucius Malfoy, Hagrid is taken away and Dumbledore suspended as the Ministry tries to stop the attacks. This was all done accurately in the movie.

Chapter 15 – Aragog
In which tension mounts in Hogwarts as everyone fears another attack except Draco Malfoy who is enjoying the situation. Acting on Hagrid’s hint about following spiders, Harry and Ron go into the Forbidden Forest, find the Ford Anglia, are captured by huge spiders, learns more about the Chamber of Secrets and are rescued by the car. This was all done very well in the movie!

Chapter 16 – The Chamber of Secrets
In which the students learn exams will be held as usual, Ginny acts strangely, Harry and Ron visit Hermione in hospital, find she has the answer to the Chambers secret (a basilisk), eavesdrop on the teachers, learn Ginny has been taken by the monster. Lockhart attempts to flee but Harry and Ron force him to accompany them to the Chamber via Moaning Myrtle’s toilet to rescue Ginny. They unlock the secret of the entrance, Lockhart attempts to escape by using Ron’s broken wand but it backfires and blocks the tunnel. Harry goes on alone. The movie was perfect!

Chapter 17 – The Heir of Slytherin
In which Harry finds an unconscious Ginny, meets Tom Riddle, who has had Ginny in his power through the diary and hears his story Fawkes, the phoenix arrives with the sorting hat, Riddle (Voldemort) calls the basilisk to kill Harry but the phoenix attacks and together they kill it, and by driving a serpent fang through the diary, get rid of Voldemort as well. Excellently done in the movie, just as in the book.

Chapter 18 – Dobby’s Reward
In which Harry tells his story to McGonagall and Dumbledore, Ginny and Lockhart are sent to hospital, Lucius Malfoy and Dobby arrive and Harry tricks Malfoy into freeing Dobby. In the moive, Harry tells his story only to Dumbledore and they don’t show Ginny and Lockhart being sent to the hospital. The rest was very well done in the movie. [Harry tells Dumbledore that he’s troubled by how similar he and Voldemort are. Dumbledore comforts Harry by telling him that Voldemort transferred some of his power into Harry when his spell backfired. The difference is that Harry chooses to use his talents for good and chose Gryffindor, not Slytherin. Oh, and when Hermione returns, well, she hugs Harry but it’s not so smooth with Ron so they just shake hands. And when Hagrid returns from Azkaban, Harry hugs him then Dumbledore claps and soon the whole hall is applauding his return.]

Year 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

1. Owl Post
a. [The Harry Potter Lexicon’s didn’t have a chapter by chapter synopsis for this book, so I’m doing it.]
b. Summer at the Dursley’s bad as usual. Ron tries to call Harry on the phone, something totally new for Ron, but gets Harry into big trouble with Uncle V. Harry b-day forgotten again by D’s. The Weasley’s remember his b-day and send a card, gift and daily prophet clipping. Mr. W won a prize, 700 galleons, so the family was at Egypt on vacation for a month. Ron gets a new wand! Hermione also sent present, letter and card. Hagrid sent a gift as well. Even though third years could visit Hogsmeade, Harry knows the D’s won’t sign the permission.

2. Aunt Marge’s Big Mistake
a. Harry made a deal to go to Hogsmeade, he had to convince the hated Aunt that he was attending a school for criminal boys. Harry slipped and made Marge’s cup explode cause she was insulting his parents. On her last day, it got bad and Harry exploded making her blow up like a balloon. Harry got his trunk and stuff, and just left.

3. The Knight Bus
a. Out in the street, Harry gets scared by a huge black, dog-like creature in the dark. Then the Knight Bus, providing anytime service to stranded witches and wizards, saves him. Harry gets to read daily prophet article about Sirius Black having escaped Azkaban and still being at large.
b. Bus takes Harry to Diagon Alley where Cornelius Fudge is waiting for him. Harry gets off with no trouble and he gets to spend the remaining two weeks of summer in a room in the leaky cauldron! The D’s will even take him back next summer. The ministry’s gone soft on accidents like Harry’s. What they don’t tell Harry is that they’re worried cause Black is after him. Harry doesn’t get to go to Hogsmeade.

4. The Leaky Cauldron
a. Harry spends a wonderful time in LC and buys all his stuff and studies in the ice cream parlor. Ron and Hermione finally get there and Hermione buys her cat, Crookshanks. Harry overhears and finds out the ministry is worried Black will break into Hogwarts to kill Harry.

5. The Dementor
a. They get on the train, talk about what’s happening to Harry, and sit in a compartment with a sleeping Prof Lupin, the new defense against the dark arts teacher. The train stops, a dementor comes on board, Harry faints and gets sick, Lupin makes the demetor leave, then sees to Harry. McGonagall sees to Harry, then has a word with Hermione about her schedule. We also learn that Hagrid is to be the new care of magical creatures teacher.
b. Dementors will be keeping watch at the school. Dumbledore doesn’t like this and forbids them from entering school grounds.

6. Talons and Tea Leaves
a. Two new classes for the third years, care of magical creatures and divination. Hermione is taking like ten classes! Hagrid is excited to be a teacher, Malfoy teases Harry about dementors. In divination, they meet Prof Trelawney. She seems to be really bad at telling the future and spends a lot of time foretelling horrible things for Harry. Says the black dog is a grim, bad omen. Says Harry will die. Of course, she predicts a death a year and none have ever died.
b. Malfoy made Hagrid’s first class miserable. Poked fun at Hagrid’s choice of books, the monster book that attacks everything. Of course you have to stroke it to open it. Hagrid also chose hippogriffs for the first lesson. Harry did great and earned Buckbeak’s loyalty, but Malfoy was mean and got bit, which was trouble for Hagrid and greatly lowered his self-esteem.

7. The Boggart in the Wardrobe
a. Start with a double potions class where Malfoy enters pretending to still be hurt. Malfoy teases Harry about hunting down Black instead of letting dementors do it. Lupin’s class turns out to be great. He teaches them how to get rid of a boggart with an awesome spell. The whole class did splendidly and Neville was great thanks to Lupin.

8. Flight of the Fat Lady
a. Oliver Wood wants the quidditch cup this year for sure, his last (they haven’t won it in seven years). Crookshanks for some reasons hates Scabbers and tries to get him any chance she gets.
b. We find out that Snape is making a special potion for Lupin. Lupin has been very good to Harry.
c. Fat Lady left her portrait and it was slashed badly. They say it was Black!

9. Grim Defeat
a. All the students had to sleep in the great hall while the teachers searched the school. Sir Cadogan’s portrait took over for the Fat Lady until Black was captured.
b. Snape takes over Lupin’s class one day and gives everyone a hard time. He says they should be learning about werewolves even though the students tell him what they’ve covered. So Snape gives them a ton of homework about how to kill werewolves. Hmm!
c. We meet Cedric Diggory, new Captain and Seeker of the Hufflepuff team. They play hufflepuff in a lot of rain. Harry can’t see through his glasses so at a break, Hermione puts a water repel spell on them. During second half, Harry sees the shape of the dark dog again. But Cedric was after the snitch. Harry zoomed after it too only to see dementors on the field! About a hundred dementors were on the field pointing up at Harry! In his head, Harry heard his mother screaming, “not Harry,” and Voldemort answering. Harry finds out later in the hospital wing that he fell off his broom about fifty feet to the ground. They thought he was dead. And Cedric got the snitch. Cedric wanted to call off the game but they all agreed that Hufflepuff won fair and square. Harry was crushed. His first miss and loss. And to make things worse, after he fell, his broom flew toward the whomping willow and got smashed to pieces.

10. The Marauder’s Map
a. Lupin returns and says he’ll talk to Snape about the homework and that they don’t have to do it.
b. At quidditch practice, Harry uses a slow, jerky school broom. He really wants one of his own. Everyone prepares for the Hogsmeade trip and Harry is the only third year who can’t go. Fred and George surprise him by giving him the Marauder’s Map.
c. So Harry uses the map to go to Hogsmeade and meets up with Ron and Hermione! Harry finds out that Black was his dad’s secret-keeper and betrayed him.

11. The Firebolt
a. Ron and Hermione try and talk Harry out of going after Black (as Mr. Weasley tried to do when seeing Harry off on the train). Harry is just too angry. They find out that Hagrid is not held responsible for Buckbeak attacking Malfoy, but there will be a hearing to dispose of Buckbeak. They will help Hagrid mount a defense but Hagrid is scared that Mr. Malfoy has them all scared so they’ll lose.
b. Harry gets a new parcel, a firebolt, the best new broomstick!
c. Hermione tells McGonagall about the firebolt so she takes it, afraid that it’s cursed.

12. The Patronus
a. Lupin calls Harry in to help him by teaching him an advanced for him spell. The patronus is a spell that can help against the dementors by giving them something to suck the happiness out of instead of Harry. The spell requires Harry to think up a very happy thought. It’s not an easy spell to master and takes Harry many tries where he faints with the fake dementor he’s practicing with. At one point, Harry heard his dad during a feint. Harry did produce one successful patronus, thought it took all his strength. He practiced with mixed results for weeks.
b. The Hermione mystery grows cause even though she has two or three classes at the same time, she never misses any! But Harry is too preoccupied to think about that.
c. We learn of a dementor’s kiss, used to suck out someone’s soul.
d. And Harry finally gets his firebolt back!
e. Scabbers is found missing and blood in the area where he was. Ron is furious at Crookshanks and Hermione.

13. Gryffindor Versus Ravenclaw
a. Harry played a great game on his firebolt. By the third time chasing the snitch three dementors entered the field and Harry’s patronus worked and he got the snitch. Gryffindor kicked butt!
b. Ron wakes to scream that he saw Sirius Black over him with a knife. All think he had a nightmare but when McGonagall comes Ron tells her to ask Sir Cadogan. Sir Cadogan admits that a man was let in, he had all the week’s password on a piece of paper. Neville lost it.

14. Snape’s Grudge
a. The fat lady returns only with a few security trolls to protect her. Neville was really punished while Ron became a celebrity. Hagrid invited Ron and Harry for tea to tell them that Hermione was very sad and lonely. They ignored her because of the firebolt and then because of scabbers. Still, Hermione managed to help prepare Buckbeak’s case when Harry and Ron totally forgot.
b. Harry prepares to go to Hogsmeade again, this time with his cloak. Harry couldn’t help bumping Malfoy around in front of the Shrieking Shack because he was making fun of Ron again. Only Malfoy saw Harry’s head! It slipped out of the cloak. Harry had to hurry back to school only to get caught by Snape. This was bad, Snape found Zonko’s candy in his pocket and got his map. The map wouldn’t reveal itself to Snape but it insulted him. Lupin backs Harry up and Ron then runs into Snapes office to back Harry up to. Lupin took the map and made Harry feel horrible by telling Harry that risking his life was no way to repay his parents’ sacrifice. As Harry and Ron see Hermione again, about to tell her off for telling on them, she lets them know that Hagrid lost his case.

15. The Quidditch Final
a. Hagrid was beyond sad. Hermione was so mad that she slapped Draco and was about to do a spell on Draco and his goons when they ran away.
b. Hermione also gets out of divination class, which kind of makes one of Trelawney’s predictions come true (that one them would leave forever).
c. Slytherin and Gryffindor tensions are very high as the final game approaches. Harry was asked to be accompanied everywhere so they wouldn’t take him out of action. Harry, looking out his window, sees Crookshanks with a big, shaggy dog. Harry beats Malfoy (the seeker), by getting the snitch and beating Slytherin for the Quidditch Cup!

16. Professor Trelawney’s Prediction
a. Buckbeak’s execution is scheduled and Fudge comes to witness it, the appeal failed as well. Divination final exam was the prof seeing everyone individually. Harry’s starts off as usual, no big deal. As Harry is leaving the prof’s voice changes, she goes rigid, and then begins to tell Harry things abut how it will happen tonight and the dark lord will rise again. When the prof came to, she didn’t know what had happened.
b. They use the cloak to visit Hagrid and find Scabbers, who looks awful and is still scared! As the committee came to execute Buckbeak, the kids leave with Scabbers. Only Scabbers won’t sit still. He hurts Ron trying to get away. Scabbers slows them down enough to hear Buckbeak get killed.

17. Cat, Rat, and Dog
a. Crookshanks comes and Scabbers goes even more nuts and gets away from Ron. Then the black dog shows up and knocks Harry down. Then the dog bites Ron’s arm and drags him away. The dog dragged Ron into a gap under the Whompin Willow with Scabbers following. Ron’s leg was broken to get him down while Harry and Hermione were being beaten off by the trees branches. It was Crookshanks who helped them get past the tree by slinking in and placing his paw on a knot in the trunk.
b. When they got to Ron they find out that the dog is actually an animagus, and it’s Black. Black disarms H and H easily. Harry has a chance to kill Black but he hesitates. Lupin joins them and finds out that he’s on Black’s side freaking everyone out. Hermione feels betrayed and tells them all that Lupin’s a werewolf. Next, we find out that Scabbers is an animagus too, Peter Pettigrew!

18. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs
a. They tell the story of Lupin and of Snape’s sneaking around trying to find out about Lupin’s montly problems and trying to get him and the others expelled. We learn that animagi are registered and kept track of. Sirius is padfoot, Peter is wormtail, and James Potter was prongs.
b. Then Snape removes his invisibility cloak! And points his wand at Black and Lupin!!

19. The Servant of Lord Voldemort
a. Snape wound’t hear about the rat, Peter. He just wanted revenge in the form of Black dead by a dementor’s kiss. Harry ends up disarming Snape to help Black! Crookshanks had been helping Black when he found out about Peter (he knew the rat wasn’t a real rat). This is where we find out that Peter really did what Black was accused of (Peter was the secret-keeper and betrayer), that Black is not only innocent, he’s Harry’s godfather and loves him. They get Peter to show himself and admit to everything.

20. The Dementor’s Kiss
a. Dragging an unconscious Snape and a tied up Pettigrew, they all headed back for the castle. Harry agrees to move in with Black once he’s cleared (now that they have Pettigrew)!
b. As they moved, Lupin turned into a werewolf because he had forgotten, in all the excitement, to take his potion. Sirius changed into a dog to keep Lupin from hurting anybody but Pettigrew used this to take Lupin’s wand. Pettigrew zapped Ron, Harry disarmed Pettigrew but too late for Pettigrew turned into a rat who could slip through his chain and escaped into the forest. Lupin as a werewolf left, Black as a dog was hurt, but he heard Harry yelling about Pettigrew escaping so he bounded off after him. Unfortunately, about 100 dementors caught Black and were going to kiss him. Harry tried to save Black, he used the patronus spell and it actually worked (he thought of leaving the D’s to live with Black). A dementor reached for Harry, not being able to pass his patronus. Then a dementor took off it’s hood and Harry saw it, filled with terror and his patronus disappeared. As he, Black and Hermione were about to be overtaken by dementors a white unicorn drew the dementors away, and Harry thought he saw someone familiar.

21. Hermione’s Secret
a. Snape told the story totally wrong. He’s sure the kids were cursed by Black to take his side and he still wanted the kids to be punished because no matter what, they helped Black. Dumbledore believes Black. Still, Black is scheduled for the Dementor’s Kiss. Dumbledore alludes to the fact they need more “time” as he speaks to Hermione. She gets it. Dumbledore tells them where Sirius is and that more than one innocent life should be saved.
b. We find out how Hermione managed all her classes, McGonagall got her a time tuner to travel back in time. They use it to go back three hours and Harry realizes Dumbledore meant that they should save Buckbeak. (Note: why didn’t they go back a little more and get Lupin’s potion?!? That would’ve solved everything.)
c. They freed Buckbeak and Sirius! While they were doing all this, they got to see everything that happened as it was happening. As Harry remembers the part with the dementors before he passed out, realized the white unicorn was a very powerful patronus. And the figure who cast it looked like his dad. He wanted to see that again. When he got there, he saw no one. Then it hit him; HE was the one who cast the patronus. So he did and he saved himself and the others. His patronus was not a unicorn, it was a white stag (prongs).

22. Owl Post Again
a. They managed to get back to the hospital wing just in time (right after they went back in time). (New note: all throughout this book, chocolate has been used to cure ailments.) Snape was beside himself. He knew Harry did it, but sounded like a fool saying so.
b. Lupin resigns. Before he goes, he gives Harry his cloak and the map back. Harry tells Dumbledore about Trelawney’s prediction. One thing Dumbledore tells Harry is that by saving Pettigrew, Pettigrew is now in his debt.
c. Ron invited Harry to visit this summer so they could see the Quidditch world cup, that cheered Harry up a bit. Harry also got a letter from Sirius, he had sent the Firebolt and gave Ron the little owl that delivered the note. The coolest thing was that Sirius sent a note giving Harry permission to visit Hogsmeade on weekends. The idea that Sirius was Harry’s godfather scared Uncle V, which Harry was sure would make this summer not so bad.
