Background:
The USS Equinox vessel was constructed at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, and was commissioned in 2370. It carried an initial crew compliment of seventy-eight and had a Mark I EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram - in case the medical officer gets hurt or killed).
Aggressively designed, the small ship and its lack of amenities manage to surpass one’s first impression of its diminutive size. Known for its durability, the Nova Class has swiftly lost its status as a ‘little ship’ and is slowly gaining acclaim for their usefulness in making for more accurate missions to new areas of space, bringing back teraquads of data on individual systems that is disseminated amongst the fleets.
The Nova sports impressive weaponry for its size, and its scientific capabilities more than make up for its reduction in speed when compared to its larger ‘cousins’. Double deflector dishes also provide added security when far from a starbase or suitable repair facility, in that a single malfunctioning or damaged deflector will not prevent the ship from going to warp.
Highly accurate sensors and computer systems makes it the perfect tool to send into scarcely known territory and many discoveries have been made by Nova Classes finding things larger Explorer-type ships such as the Galaxy Class left behind.
Amenities are few and far between on a Nova class starship, but its work is important and crews that work on these small ships know their worth and protect their reputations fiercely. Much like the favored Oberth, the Nova is sure to hold a place in Starfleet lore for a long time to come.

I’m looking forward to welcoming you and your crew of Starfleet Cadets to Starbase 47. I’d love to say that my Starbase is at your disposal but I have an urgent need of you, your ship, and your crew. I’ve only got two ships at my disposal right now, the Bombay and the Endeavour, and both of them are away on Starbase business. We needed another ship and yours is the only Starfleet vessel that is in between missions. And the fact that yours is a Science vessel is perfect!”

Class M is derived from the Vulcan term "Minshara."
Class M planets denote planets whose atmospheres are composed of nitrogen and oxygen and have an abundance of liquid water necessary for carbon-based life to exist. Extensive plant and animal life often flourishes; often, a sentient race is also present. Earth is a textbook example of a Class M world; other Class M planets that appear throughout the known universe include Vulcan, Cardassia Prime, Bajor, Betazed, Romulus, Ferenginar, Qo'noS, and Nibiru.

A volcanic eruption has disrupted communication and travel on the main continent of the planet. The people there need to know whether or not their world is in danger or whether life can return to normal eventually. Their people do not yet have the technology to determine the threat of volcanoes on their world.

TholiansBack at Starbase 47:
Ambassador Jetanien is having problems with the Tholian Assembly because the Tholians claim they had nothing to do with the destruction of the Bombay while all the evidence points to them.
<img src="https://educatoral.com/img/Voyages/Tholians.jpg" width="100%">
We have a decision to make.
BombayWreckage
Or.
TholiansDirectly
Choose one.Rubble and space debris, including the bodies of the dead crew, show evidence that the ship was destroyed by a very powerful weapon. We have no records that the Tholians, or any other known race, have a weapon of such power!
<img src="https://educatoral.com/img/Voyages/debris.jpg" width="100%">
EnergyTrailAfter questioning the Tholian high command through the Ambassador, we find out that the only Tholian ship in the area of the Bombay at the time of their destruction was the Aen'q Tholis.
<img src="https://educatoral.com/img/Voyages/TholianShip.jpg" width="75%">
Go find the Aen'q Tholis?
If so, AnotherLostShip, otherwise decide on DecisionN.As we scan the area for leftover energy trails to see if we can find any evidence as to what could have caused such destruction we hear that back at Starbase 47 the Ambassador is dealing with the problem of making things right between the Federation, the Tholians AND the Klingons.
That allows us to continue to investigate the mystery at hand.
Communications Officer: "Captain, I've intercepted a communication from the Tholians. Luckily, our universal translator has added their language to its database and we can translate their language. Turns out that one of their ships, the Aen'q Tholis, has gone missing!"
Captain Gonzalez: "Thank you Lieutenant. Since there's no evidence that the Aen’q Tholis was destroyed by the massive weapon that destroyed the Bombay, we need to investigate the Bombay site further.
We continue scanning the area around the Bombaby rubble. Finally, after what seemed an enternity, we pick up a trail of energy showing us where the Bombay came from and we follow it!
IngrahamB
Following the energy trail back to its source reveals that it came from a nearby planet! Planet Ingraham B.
<img src="https://educatoral.com/img/Voyages/IngrahamB.jpg" width="100%">
Ingraham B is an uninhabited planet. This was the homeworld of the extinct Ingraham B natives.
In 2265, the planet was invaded by neural parasites that came from Theta Cygni XII. The inhabitants of Ingraham B were all killed in the mass insanity caused by the parasites. A vessel of the last surviving infected departed from Ingraham B carrying the parasites with them. It arrived at the Deneva colony in 2267.
Captain González: “Get us closer to that planet.”
As the ship approaches the planet the Science Officer exclaims, “I’m detecting a powerful energy surge on the planet, Captain. Readings are off the scale!”
Captain González: “Evasive maneuvers helm! Full impulse power! Navigations, raise shields to 100%!”
<a href="https://www.trekcore.com/audio/redalertandklaxons/tng_red_alert1.mp3" target="_blank">RED ALERT!</a>
As the ship increases speed before attaining standard orbit, the inertial dampers were brought online but not before everyone on the ship felt the acceleration. Crew members were rocked back and some were falling all over the ship!
Navigation: “Captain! A beam of energy is coming from the planet! It hit us but since we were in motion the energy glanced off our shields. Even from a glancing blow our shields are down to 28%!”
As the ship rocked from the glancing blow more crew members were shaken and knocked about.
Captain González: “All right then, get us out of here Helm, maximum warp! Starfleet is not going to lose another ship. Plot a course back to Starbase 47.”
Warp engaged.
First Officer: “Captain, why are we running away?!”
Captain González: “You saw what that weapon did to the Bombay. And only a glancing hit nearly destroyed our shields! We can’t risk losing one of the two only remaining ships in this sector. If a glancing blow from that energy weapon damaged our shields that much we would not survive a direct hit. Science Officer, did you get some readings before we warped out of there?”
Science Officer: “Yes, Captain. I’m analyzing the data now.”
Captain González: “Good, let’s regroup at Starbase 47 while I prepare a report for the Admiral. And don’t worry, Number 1, I plan on coming back here. Only we need a plan and we need to be prepared. I don’t want to get caught off guard again by that strange weapon.”
RepairsThe Tholians claim they lost communications with the Aen'q Tholis three days ago but they do give us their last known location.
We head out to the location at maximum warp.
Upon arrival we find the Aen'q Tholis has also been destroyed!
Time to make a choice:
AwaitFurtherOrders
OR
ScanAenqTholisWhen you approached the Captain with your idea the Captain said that the Admiral would most likely not accept that decision. Looks like it’s up to us and we have to get down there to learn more and solve this mystery!
Propose your new course of action with your ship Captain.
Make sure you use the proper chain of command:
* First, find the highest ranking person in your class.
* Explain the plan to your highest ranking person and see what he or she thinks.
* If the plan is viable have the highest ranking person propose the course of action with Captain GonzálezGood choice! Now go and await further orders from Captain González (first explain to him what part of this mission you’re on so he knows what’s happening).
Scanning through the debris and bringing pieces of the ship on board for a closer look reveals that the Aen'q Tholis was destroyed by phaser fire! That means that the Aen’q Tholis was not destroyed by a powerful weapon of unknown origin but by a regular starship.
Evidence also shows that it didn't fire upon its attackers because their phaser banks had no residual energy and their ship carried no torpedoes. This could point to the fact that they were attacked by a cloaked ship narrowing down their attackers to the only two races known to have cloaking capabilities, the Klingons or the Romulans!

Next step:
Report to Ambassador Jetanien back at Starbase 47 since he is working with the Klingons as well as the Tholians. Talks between the Tholians and the Federation began well before the Federation started exploring the Taurus Reach. By the time the Federation established Starbase 47 we had tenuous but amenable relations with the Tholian Assembly. Then the Kingons began to move into the Taurus Reach after the Federation moved in and that complicated our already tenuous relations with the Tholian Assembly. Klingons and Tholians do not get along at all, well, the Tholians don’t really trust any alien species but with the Klingons, it’s worse. Jetanien has been doing an incredible job just getting the Tholian and Klingon ambassadors in the same room to meet!
Klingons
Klingons deny having any ships near the Aen'q Tholis.
You ask Admiral Reyes to check with our Intel to see if they can verify their claim.
Lt Commander T’Prynn, a member of Starfleet Intelligence, has verified that Starfleet has been keeping a close eye on Klingon actions in the Taurus Reach and she can verify that the Klingsons have not reached the sector of space near Ingraham B.
If that’s true that only leaves the Romulans but they have no presence here in the Taurus Reach. Or do they? Or have the Klingons snuck cloaked ships past where we thought they were?
We will have to solve this mystery later. Right now there are more pressing concerns.
Meanwhile Commander Cooper has relayed a message from Admiral Reyes, our assistance is needed yet again!
“Problems at the Planet Erilon where the USS Endeavour is in trouble!”
The USS Endeavour is Starbase 47’s last remaining starship!
“We’re on our way!” exclaims Captain González.
As the landing party aboard the Starbase lines up near Captain González, the captain reaches for his communicator:
Captain González: “Transporter Room, landing party prepared to beam up.”
Transporter Room: “Ready to beam up the landing party, Captain.”
Captain González: “Energize.”
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/1w3_kyVNjOs" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Then aboard the Equinox.
Captain González: “Navigation, plot a course to Planet Erilon. Helm, once the course is plotted head to Erilon at maximum warp. Here we go again.”
<a href="https://www.trekcore.com/audio/warp/tng_warp3_clean.mp3" target="_blank">Warp Engines Engaged.</a>
EndeavourEndeavourSpecs reports that during a routine mining expedition on the ice planet Erilon a device was turned on. This somehow activated what can only be described as a planetary defense system. Beams of energy of incredible power almost destroyed the Endeavour!
Captain Khatani of the Endeavour had to make the difficult decision to save her ship and crew at the expense of losing some people and miners on the planet!
As Captain Khatani’s report states, the Endeavour transported as many as they could off of the planet surface before all shields went down. Some of her crew and several miners were still on the planet while the weapon powered up to fire again. Impulse engines were disabled so they couldn’t even maneuver, shields were down, and they couldn’t lock on the weapon even though they were firing full phaser banks and photon torpedoes! Without a weapons lock, they didn't seem to manage to find much less hit the weapon.
Since the weapon was clearly not damaged enough to stop firing and was still powerful enough to take out all their shields and impulse engines, Captain Khatani made the decision to warp her damaged ship back to Starbase 47 leaving the people on the planet. Thank goodness their warp drive was still functional!
It was indeed the only decision left to the captain lest she lose her ship and all of her crew. After the Bombay, losing the Endeavour and another entire starship crew was not an option.

Looks like our investigation into the weapon on Ingraham B will have to wait, the Endeavour needs our help! Are there really two planets with weapons that can destroy a Federation starship in two or three hits?!?
It sounds as if the Endeavour was attacked by a similar weapon to the one that destroyed the Bombay and on two different and separate solar systems!
We need to get to planet Erilon and see if those on the planet survived!

SensorSweepAt a safe distance sensors seem to detect no energy readings from Erilon. This could mean that the planet's defense system is offline.
Science Officer: “I recommend moving in closer and orbit Erilon to scan the planet more completely.”
Captain: SensorSweep
It will take at least a week for the Endeavour's repairs and other Starfleet ships are busy patrolling the different neutral zones so aren't available to help. Besides, it would take them days at full warp to reach us.
Looks like it’s just us and we have to investigate by getting closer. Erilon
We warp in several thousand kilometers from Erilon.
“Science Officer?”
Science Officer: “Readings are still normal, Captain. No energy readings whatsoever.”
Captain: “Bring us closer helm. Begin standard orbit. Scan the planet for life signs once we’re close enough.”
A complete sensor sweep of Erilon from orbit confirms that the energy readings from the planet are zero. Sadly, life sign readings are also zero. Something killed those left on the planet.
It seems that the device that damaged the Endeavour is currently offline.
LandingParty#Send a landing party down to check the device?

DecisionN
OR
BeamDownInvestigating further on the planet’s surface requires that we send down a landing party, also known as an Away Team.
Who do we need to send on the landing party to make sure we get as much information as possible, keep the landing party safe, and hopefully not turn the planet’s defense system on?

IceStationThe Captain approved your recommendation! Well done. :)
The team you recommended prepares for their away mission. Standard issue equipment includes tricorders, extra communicators to keep in contact with the ship, and phasers. Since the planet is an ice planet the team puts on subzero gear. Reports show the air is breathable, about 21% oxygen so no breathing gear is necessary. The team meets in the transporter room.
The transporter officer beams the away team about 50 meters from the ice station. The landing party finds the station intact although they can already see dead bodies. Sensor scans from handheld tricorders show that the station is completely powerless. Whatever attacked the ship either drained all the power from the station or somehow shut down all the power.

Luckily, since there is no power the door to the station is open for the away team. The interior door, protecting the inside of the station, including all the labs, is closed. Luckily, one of the landing party members, an engineer (you did pick an engineer, right?), manages to get the door open.
The equipment in the station is standard issue and doesn't seem to be connected to the planet in any way to turn on a planetary defense system capable of destroying a Starfleet Starship. So if people were able to land on this planet and build this station, how, or better yet, why did it attack the Endeavour??

Communicators don’t seem to work at all in these tunnels. You either need to go back up and out of the tunnel system through the hatch or keep going.
BackUpHatch
OR
FollowTunnels
Following the tunnels, one by one, shows a series of giant cable-like structures that seem to go for large distances into the very planet!
While part of the landing party investigates the tunnels a security officer back at the station gets a communication from the Equinox, "We're taking evasive maneuvers at full shields because there are energy readings spiking up all over the planet! Get your people out of those tunnels so we can beam them up before the planet's defense system destroys our ship and kills you all!"
Science Officer aboard the Equinox: "Energy readings suggest the planet's system will be at full power in 3 minutes Captain! I think that means it will be ready to fire at that time!"
Captain: Got it, Lieutenant.”
“González to landing party, you have 2 minutes to get into transporter range so we can lower shields long enough to get you before we're fired upon. Hurry up!"
"Navigation, lock on to the sources of those energy readings and fire all phaser banks and photon torpedoes!" Commanded the Captain.
By the time the security officer on the station hears that last transmission she jumps into the hatch and yells for the rest of the landing party, "Get out of there NOW, we've got less than two minutes before the planet fires on the Equinox!"
By the time the rest of the team hears the security officer they are not sure they will make it in time. "We're not going to make it! Tell the Equinox to get to safety, we'll figure out what to do," yelled the Master Chief.
The first member of the landing party that makes it to the hatch climbs up and into communication range and time is almost up! "Equinox, we need more time. Warp out and leave us!"
Captain: "Full power to starboard shields and evasive maneuver alpha 5 helm!"
Helm: "Aye Captain!"
The ship heads for the planet, as if to go through the atmosphere and land only to turn and skim the outer atmosphere just as the energy weapon fires! The beam almost missed the ship glancing off the shields just as it did on Ingraham B. Even with a glancing blow, seemingly bouncing off the shields instead of directly impacting the ship, the crew is taken off balance by the hit. The red alert klaxons are going off all over the ship.
Science Officer: “Glancing blow again Captain, shields took some damage but we’re okay! Shields are still at 65% power!”
Navigation: "Captain we've managed to destroy five, no six, sources of the energy surge!"
Science Officer: "It's not enough Captain, the planet's system is getting ready to fire again! There seem to be sources of energy all over the planet!"
Captain: "All hands, brace for impact!"
As the helm engages the impulse engines turning so that the starboard side of the ship faces the planet the second beam of energy shoots from the planet. The beam of energy hits the Equinox but this time it’s a direct hit coming from a part of the planet that seemed to have no energy source. The crew is rocked harder and many are thrown about. Some systems go off-line completely as emergency lights turn on smothering everything in a red hue. As major power is lost the secondary systems, much like a generator, restore minimal life support, computers, weapons, and impulse engines.
Captain: "Status?"
Science officer: "Shields at 25%. One more hit like that and we will lose all shields. We can't survive two more hits! Damage reports from all sectors coming in, Captain. The ship is still functional. As for the planet, energy readings suggest the weapon will be ready in 50 seconds!"
Captain: "Landing party, are you in position?"
While the Equinox was trying to evade the planet’s weapon the landing party had managed to scramble out of the hatch to get into transporter range. While the last two were waiting their turn to exit through the hatch…
Operations Officer (you did send an operations officer, right?): “Commander! I’m getting readings coming from three of the tunnels.”
Commander: “What is it?”
Operations Officer: “I’m not sure, sir. It’s like a life form but unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Energy readings are higher than any life form we’ve ever encountered and yet it’s registering as alive. Funny thing is that it wasn’t there before.”
Landing Party Science Officer: “Commander, I’ve locked into the life forms. They are moving towards us incredibly fast. Sir, these might be the things that killed the Endeavour’s landing party! We need to get out of here, now!”
Commander: “Got it! Let’s move people! The Equinox is waiting out there for us so let’s get into transporter range! Move! Move! MOVE!”
The last three still in the tunnel start to make their way up the hatch and one got out before the other two, Lieutenant Johnson and Ensign Gorsky. The Lt and Ensign hear one of the creatures right behind them! They turn and see the creature, a hulking, dark figure moving fast with eyes blinking blue, almost like blue lights. It lunges for the two as they fire. The creature slows but continues to come at them!
Lt Johnson: "Commander! We're firing full phasers at one of the creatures and not only is it NOT dying, it's still coming at us! Ensign, get up that hatch! Now! That's an order!"
Ensign Gorsky starts to climb up the hatch while still firing at the creature. It's not enough, the creature reaches Lt Johnson and swipes at her with a dark black, clawed hand tearing at her jugular.
Ensign Gorsky: "The creature killed Lt Johnson! It just tore her throat!"
The security officer at the hatch reaches down and grabs the Ensign's arm. As the Ensign turns to get out of the tunnel, he screams in pain! The security officer pulls the Ensign as hard as he could but he almost gets dragged back into the tunnel as the creature takes the Ensign!
Security Officer: "Commander! The creature took Ensign Gorsky!"
The Commander grabs the security officer and throws him off the hatch, closing and locking the hatch.
Landing Party Commander: "It's too late. We can't save them. Let's honor their sacrifice by getting outta here!"
BAM! BAM!
Landing party Commander: "That thing is breaking the hatch! It looks like it’ll be out in a matter of seconds at the rate it’s damaging that hatch! Equinox, we're in position and ready to beam out! We’re in danger here so if you can beam us out anytime now that would be great!"
Captain: Transporter room, beam the landing party back aboard pronto! Ensign, once the landing party is safely on board get us out of here, maximum warp!"
Helm: "Aye, Captain!"
Transporter room: “I’ve got a lock on them, minus two. There are two missing!"
Landing Party Commander: "Their gone. One of the creatures got them both and it's almost out to finish the job!"
Transporter room: "Got it. Drop the shields so I can beam the survivors up.”
Navigations Officer: “Shields are down, beam them up now!”
In what seemed like an eternal number of seconds the landing party is beamed safely aboard the ship.
After the landing party was successfully beamed back aboard the ship, shields were raised, what was left of them anyway, and the captain ordered the ship to leave the planet at full warp.
Just as the warp engines reached full power and the ship zoomed off through space-time, the planet's weapon fired just missing the Equinox! That was close, too close.
The Equinox was on route to Starbase 47 with a full report of what happened and for much needed repairs. The Equinox may not have been as powerful as the Endeavour but in this instance being smaller and more maneuverable bought them the time they needed to make it out alive!

Admiral Reyes: “Captain González, may I speak with you privately for a moment?”
Captain: “Of course, Admiral.” To his officers, “I’ll see you back at the officer’s lounge.” To the admiral, “what is it, Admiral?”
Admiral: “It's sad. So many funerals, so many dead. It was never supposed to get this bad."
"What I’m about to tell you is of a very sensitive nature. I could get in huge trouble for telling you because I’m under strict orders not to tell anyone, but seeing as how we lost the Bombay, and the Endeavour and your ship have taken such poundings and lost members of their crew, and as seeing as how your ship is a Science vessel, it makes it very important that I share some secrets with you, Captain.”
Captain: “I understand, Admiral. Proceed.”
Admiral: “Most everyone aboard this Starbase, all the ship’s crews attached to this Starbase, and heck just about everyone back at Starfleet and the Federation think we are here, in the Taurus Reach, to colonize new planets for mining purposes. Well, that’s just a cover, a screen. We’ve discovered something here and it’s bigger than anything we’ve discovered before.”
“You see, almost 120 years ago, when Captain Jim Kirk of the Enterprise first encountered the Tholians something happened that was purposefully left out of the history databases. While caught in the Tholian web the Enterprise beamed aboard some Tholian debris, to study their enemy, and they brought aboard some organic material. This material had a genome or genetic makeup that was millions of times more complicated than any life form we’ve ever encountered. This genome has been the source of the most covert (secret) study ever undertaken by Starfleet and the Federation. Only a select few and the highest members of Starfleet command and the Federation even know about it. Not even the President of the Federation of Planets knows!”
“After years of research and studying the organic material and trying to decipher the genome, we knew that our research couldn’t go any further unless we had access to this region of space, the region where that genome came from. You see, our Scientists have determined that all our DNA, from the Vulcans to the Klingons to us, could have come from this genome, what they are calling a meta genome. In fact, that’s what we’re calling it and this whole investigation, The Meta Genome Project. We could be on the verge of discovering a species so ancient that it could very well be the first species to ever exist!”
Captain: “But Admiral, why has this been kept secret for so long? And why still keep it secret now?”
Admiral: “It was believed that this meta genome could be used for destructive purposes. Even for weapons far more powerful than anything we’ve ever seen.”
Captain: “You mean like the weapons that destroyed the Bombay and almost destroyed the Endeavour and the Equinox?!”
Admiral: “Until now we weren’t sure, but now we’re starting to believe that it could be true, especially after your reports. Since your ship and the Endeavour are the only ships that have been attacked and survived, we have evidence to lead us to believe it’s true. The Bombay’s destruction was the first time we were aware such weapons even existed. So we’re beginning to see how this meta genome could be used for destruction. If that is the case, that this meta genome can be used to create such weapons, then I’m glad we’ve kept this a secret all these years!”
“Now we have to deal with the Tholians. We weren’t sure why they are so distrustful of other races but now we have an inkling. They’ve never agreed to be part of the Federation and even now will barely meet with us and keep insinuating that they want us out of this region. Ingraham B and Erilon, plus a host of other planets, have these tunnels your crew found on Erilon. Tunnels that seem to go through the entire planet. And only recently have we even figured out how to activate them. A turn of events that has proven to be catastrophic. But right now we need to find out who destroyed the Aen’q Tholis because the Tholians are blaming the Klingons and if they go to war everything we’ve been doing for the past century could be at risk!”
Captain: “My ship and I are at your command. What would you like us to do?”
Admiral: “Nothing yet. Our first priority is to avert war between the Tholians and the Klingons.”
Who do you think destroyed the Tholian ship, the Aen’q Tholis?

Research Time:
Let’s back up a bit here. In order for any of this to be true we are taking for granted that space ships can travel at speeds faster than light. Warp speed refers to traveling at speeds faster than light, for example, Warp 1 is the speed of light, Warp 2 is twice the speed of light, and so on.
How fast does light travel?
What is a light year? In other words, what does a light year mean?
What is an AU (Astronomical Unit)?
What would it take for our space ships to travel at the speed of light? (As a bonus, look up inertial dampers to see how the creators of Star Trek made it so that people weren’t crushed as the star ships accelerated at impulse speeds and warp speeds.)
If traveling at light speed is impossible then how can we ever travel to other star systems?
DiplomaticRelations
While the crew of the USS Equinox were awaiting repairs on their ship, Ambassador Jetanien was busy meeting with the Tholian and Klingon ambassadors to keep all out war between the Tholians, Klingons and the Federation from breaking out. A war at this juncture would compromise the Meta-Genome research or worse expose the research to the Tholians or the Klingons! In the wrong hands that research could be used for destruction and domination. The USS Endeavour, the only ship in the Taurus Reach, had its hands full investigating all the goings on especially after two weapons were discovered in the Ingraham B system and the Erilon system. Currently, the Endeavour is running sensor sweeps near the area where the Tholian ship was destroyed because the Tholians suspect the Klingons destroyed their ship, an act of war, since the ship was not destroyed by the alien superweapon that destroyed the USS Bombay.

Federation Ambassador Jetanien: Lady and Gentleman, it appears that until we share all the data we have each collected surrounding the destruction of the Tholian ship, Aen’q Tholis, and the USS Bombay we will not know for sure if the Klingons had anything to do with it.
I have at my disposal all the data collected by the starships Equinox and Endeavour since the destruction of the Bombay. I am ready to share it if you two will share yours.

KlingonAmbassador Lugok
Klingon Ambassador Lugok: If my word is not enough to prove that we did not have anything to do with the destruction of the Tholian ship I guess I will share what we know. But know this, if we had destroyed the Aen’q Tholis it would NOT be hidden and secret. Klingons live for glorious battle and we would have made it known if it were our doing! There is no honor in keeping such a victory secret.
Federation Ambassador Jetanien: While the Klingons are known for their prowess on the battlefield, looking at the data will appease the Federation once and for all. Ambassador Sesrene?
Tholian Ambassador Sesrene: Yes, if the data shows the Klingons had nothing to do with it we will be satisfied. It would be better if we knew who was responsible. Things were much better before Federation and Klingon entered our space.
Jetanien did not respond to Sesrene’s last statement. His job was to keep the Tholians happy so the Federation could continue peaceful relations and therefore continue their research in the Taurus Reach. All was going well until the Klingons began colonizing planets in the Taurus Reach but even that wasn’t a problem until now. Whatever attacked the Tholian ship had to be dealt with!
After hours of examining Federation, Tholian and Klingon data a few things became clear. First, the Klingons were telling the truth, there were no signs or records of any Klingon ship being anywhere near the Aen’q Tholis. All Klingon ships were accounted for during the time the Aen’q Tholis was attacked. Second, and as was known before, it was not the super weapon that destroyed the Aen’q Tholis. The weapon signatures were common for starships coming from the Alpha Quadrant, which includes most Federation races, the Klingons, the Romulans, the Ferengi and the Cardassians. Third, the Aen’q Tholis did not fire or defend themselves in any way, which could mean they trusted the ship that fired upon them or the ship that fired upon them was cloaked.
Tholian Ambassador Sesrene: We are convinced Klingons did not destroy our ship.
Klingon Ambassador Lugok: Finally! I told you we had nothing to do with it. Maybe next time you would all believe us the first time! Of course, we still have no evidence clearing your people of this Ambassador Sesrene.
Tholian Ambassador Sesrene: True. But if we did this to ourselves to say start war, then why am I not pursuing such an option?
Federation Ambassador Jetanien: So you are saying that if your own people did this you would be pushing for war, or at least to get the Federation and Klingons out of your space? That could be true. We already have the Endeavour helping find out what happened. I hear that the Equinox will soon be ready to join the Endeavour and the Equinox is a Science vessel so maybe with their help we can figure out what actually happened.
EquinoxInvestigatesAenqTholisCaptain González: All Equinox crew, report back to the ship for duty.
A bunch of the Equinox crew were already aboard the ship as they were helping with the repairs. As for the rest, some were beamed to the Equinox transporter room while others made their way to the airlock aboard the space station. Within 15 minutes, all the crew were aboard the ship getting ready for their next mission.
Captain González: Attention Equinox crew, we have been ordered to go back to the region of space where the Aen’q Tholis was destroyed. It appears that diplomatic discussions are going well but until someone finds out what happened to the Tholian ship trust is not going happen. Helm, plot a course to the Ravannar Sector in the Ingraham B system, and make sure to steer clear of Ingraham B so we don’t activate their weapon. Warp 8.
Helm: Aye, aye captain. Engaging warp engines to warp 8.
Once at the Ravannar Sector the Equinox began sensor sweeps.
Captain González: Communications, contact the Endeavour. Since they’ve been working here already, ask them to send us any sensor data they’ve already collected. No sense going over what they’ve already done. Science officer, go through the data from the Endeavour then plot a new course for us to investigate.
EnergySignature
OR
DebrisField
Going over the Endeavour’s sensor data reveals the apparent path the Aen’q Tholis had taken. They were headed away from a planetoid in this quadrant but they were using impulse engines, which suggests they were probably looking for something or studying the planetoid.
At one point, probably when they were first attacked, they changed course toward the planetoid. Probably to use it as a shield but they were too late and the ship exploded.
Scanning the area where the Aen’q Tholis, on a hunch, you discover a slightly different energy source!
Science Officer: Captain!
Captain González: Report.
Science Officer: At the location where the Aen’q Tholis turned, possibly away from the attacker, there is an energy signature that appears to be common but when I compared it to Tholian ion exhaust from their impulse engines, it was different. Subtle, but still not quite the same.
Captain González: Can you track that second ion trail?
Science Officer: I believe so, yes.
AwaitFurtherOrders
OR
IonTrail
Determining the chemical composition of the second ion trail was necessary. Once the exact makeup was determined the sensors were calibrated to follow the trail. It was slow going because the ions were scattered through space.
After several hours…
Captain González: Are we on the trail of this second energy signature?
Science Officer: We are 77% sure that we are on the correct trail. We should be able to determine if and when this second ship went to warp.
Captain González: What system is in the direct path of this ion trail?
Science Officer: Checking Captain. It’s the Palgrenax system. Specifically one that the Klingons have colonized.
Captain González: This does not look good for the Klingons. Let me know when you’ve determined for sure if the ship warped in that direction.
After several more hours of painstaking scanning and checking data to see if the ion trail was indeed heading toward the Palgrenax system...
Science Officer: Captain! This is it! The ion trail ends here and there is evidence of a jump to warp speed. And it’s in line with the Klingon occupied Palgrenax system.
Captain González: Let’s pay a visit to our Klingon neighbors. Comm, let Starbase 47 know what we’ve discovered and ask the Ambassador to get us permission to investigate that region.
Communications Officer: Aye, Captain.
By the time the Equinox warped to the Klingon region of the Palgrenax system two Klingon warbird ships were already scanning the system.
Klingon Captain Kalpeth: Captain González, I presume. I am Kalpeth, Captain of the Klingon Warbird Paktah.
Captain González: Yes, Captain Kalpeth. Honor to you!
Klingon Captain Kalpeth: And you, Captain. We’ve been informed of your coming. We have been scanning this area to see if indeed there is a cloaked ship out here. We want to find out who is making the Klingon Empire look like liars!
Captain González: We are sending you the data we have on the ion signature of the ship. This will help us find it.
Once the Klingon ships and the Equinox focused their scanners on the exact ion signature they started to zero in on something. There was indeed another ship in the Klingon sector of space and it was NOT a Klingon ship!
Before they knew it Captain Kalpeth’s ship was fired upon as a ship quickly uncloaked! Before the Klingons and the Equinox could lock on the firing ship it blew up! Debris littered the area where a cloaked ship had been hiding. They blew themselves up!
TaurusReachConclusionGoing back to the debris field you compare the previous data to new sensor sweeps. Beaming new pieces of the Aen’q Tholis shows that the ship was attacked by phaser fire. The attacking ship was able to fire several times with no retaliation from the Aen’q Tholis.
It appears that enemy fire was concentrated on the impulse engines. Once the engines exploded it was only a matter of time before the entire ship went. The destruction was from the inside out.
It probably looked something like this:
<img src="https://educatoral.com/img/Voyages/21-part-2-act-5-ship-explosion.jpg" width="100%">
The attacking ship did not target the Aen’q Tholis’s weapons and still the Aen’q Tholis didn’t fire. Their weapons were functioning and yet they didn’t fire upon their attackers. Was it because they wanted to die? Tholian bodies in the debris proves that the crew was still on board when the ship was destroyed. Or was it that they really couldn’t see the attackers? It must have been a cloaked ship.
Checking the debris field only confirmed everything we already knew. No new information here.A thorough investigation of the explosion revealed that the ship that destroyed the Aen’q Tholis and warped to the Klingon sector of the Palgrenax system was the Romulan Warship known as the Bloodied Talon! Discovered, and likely to be defeated or taken custody and bringing shame to their home, they chose suicide.
<img src="https://educatoral.com/img/Voyages/romulanvetshuttlejarok-resized.jpg" width="100%">
The Romulan Ship, Bloodied Talon
Communications with the Romulan Command got nowhere. The Romulans deny having any knowledge of the Bloodied Talon. As far as they were concerned the Bloodied Talon was supposed to be in Romulan space patrolling the neutral zone.
Admiral Reyes: And now that the Bloodied Talon is destroyed we have no evidence that the Romulans sent it here to spy on the Federation, the Tholians, and the Klingons. We all know that’s what that ship was doing here but now we can’t prove it.
Captain González: And just as is expected with a covert operation like spying, a good Romulan will commit suicide than be captured and interrogated.
Admiral Reyes: Exactly. So Captain, we extend our gratitude for all that you and your crew have done for us and our work here in the Taurus Reach. Starfleet has recalled your ship for another mission and they’ve sent us the USS Reliant to help the Endeavour keep studying the two planetary weapons we’ve discovered here. If those planets have such massive weapons then there must be something worthwhile there to protect.
Captain González: Aye Admiral. And good luck to you and the crews of the Endeavour and the Reliant. Let me know if we can be of service to you in the future.
Next mission, back to the planet Palgren to help them with their anomaly!
