Tsunamis

About Tsunamis

Tsunamis are ocean waves produced by land slides, earthquakes

sometimes even meteorites, and volcanoes.

Tsunamis are actually series of waves going the

average speed of 450 mph and they go up to 600 mph.

The word Tsunami comes from Japan and means harbor wave.

Earthquakes

Earthquakes are caused by the plates shifting. The largest earthquakes are in South America, Mexico, Japan, China, and Alaska. An earthquake is the shaking of the ground by an abrupt shift of rock on or along the fault line. For a tsunami to happen, an earthquake underwater would force water into a wave. The tsunami and earthquake could take the lives of 100,000 plus people. Underwater volcanoes can also cause tsunamis. This can also be worse because it is also making a volcano. Also this could take the lives of many more.

Tsunami news report

The Asian tsunami began at the epicenter which is where the plates shift. The epicenter was on the bottom half of the Burma plate. The coasts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand were hit the hardest. People then ran up to higher ground as the waves began to come upon the shore. People began to grab light poles and holding on to what ever they could to not be swept away. People would grab their loved ones so they would not lose them in the many waves. The waves were very destructive and it will take many years to rebuild the destruction but with our help we can help.
