We focused on the dimension of the <strong><em>Next Generation Science Standards<\/em><\/strong> or <em><strong>NGSS<\/strong> <\/em>known as the <em><strong>Science and Engineering Practices<\/strong><\/em> or <strong><em>SEPs<\/em><\/strong>. One of the things we discussed is the focus of the Science and Engineering Practices: to have our students <strong>DOING<\/strong> Science! Basically, the <strong>SEPs<\/strong> are the things that Scientists and Engineers actually do as part of their jobs.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here are the practices right from the NGSS:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educatoral.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SEPs.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5721\" src=\"http:\/\/www.educatoral.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SEPs-400x116.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/educatoral.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SEPs-400x116.png 400w, https:\/\/educatoral.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SEPs-150x43.png 150w, https:\/\/educatoral.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SEPs-768x223.png 768w, https:\/\/educatoral.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SEPs-1024x297.png 1024w, https:\/\/educatoral.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/SEPs.png 1407w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>SEP K-12 Progression<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On the NGSS website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/files\/Appendix%20F%20%20Science%20and%20Engineering%20Practices%20in%20the%20NGSS%20-%20FINAL%20060513.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Appendix F<\/a>, you will find a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/files\/Appendix%20F%20%20Science%20and%20Engineering%20Practices%20in%20the%20NGSS%20-%20FINAL%20060513.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PDF document<\/a> with 33 pages of information and details on using the <strong>SEPs<\/strong> with students. Something you&#8217;ll be able to use from that document is a K through 12 scope and sequence for each of the <strong>SEPs<\/strong>! On page 6 of the PDF document for Practice 2 on Developing and Using Models, for example, you will see a scope and sequence for how students develop and use models from K through 12! Students need a balance of reading and learning about Science with <strong>DOING<\/strong> Science. Making sense of phenomena requires doing, such as working through labs, to deal with what can often be discrepant events. Hands-on helps us make sense of Science and designing solutions to problems in Engineering requires making things It&#8217;s important to note, as with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/files\/AppendixE-ProgressionswithinNGSS-061617.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Disciplinary Core Ideas<\/strong><\/em><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/files\/AppendixE-ProgressionswithinNGSS-061617.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>DCI&#8217;s<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/files\/Appendix%20G%20-%20Crosscutting%20Concepts%20FINAL%20edited%204.10.13.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Crosscutting Concepts<\/strong><\/em><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/files\/Appendix%20G%20-%20Crosscutting%20Concepts%20FINAL%20edited%204.10.13.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>CCCs<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, that the order of the SEPs does NOT constitute importance. There is no <strong>SEP<\/strong> that is more important than any other. So when we refer to Practice 2, it is not less important than Practice 1. We are also not expected to address every single practice in every single lesson or even in every single unit either. We wouldn&#8217;t want teachers burning out or burning out their students by trying to cover every practice in every lesson or unit! This is especially helpful when you are <a href=\"http:\/\/corelaboratewa.org\/ngss-science-shifting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating your own NGSS-aligned units<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/corelaboratewa.org\/aligning-a-kit-to-the-ngss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aligning current curriculum to the NGSS yourself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Really Cool Tool<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So as you look to add an <strong>SEP<\/strong> to a Science lesson or looking at adding <strong>SEPs<\/strong> to a unit, I have a great resource that was shared at the OSPP webinar. If you haven&#8217;t visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/stemteachingtools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>STEM Teaching Tools website<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, check it out!
