{"id":7416,"date":"2021-10-29T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-29T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/educatoral.com\/wordpress\/?p=7416"},"modified":"2024-12-26T20:50:35","modified_gmt":"2024-12-27T04:50:35","slug":"sustainability-development-in-minecraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educatoral.com\/wordpress\/2021\/10\/29\/sustainability-development-in-minecraft\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainability Development in Minecraft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenge!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UNESCO joins Minecraft Global Build Challenge: Peace with Nature\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/owjHgr0m35A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That is this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/education.minecraft.net\/en-us\/resources\/global-build-challenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Minecraft Education Edition&#8217;s Global Challenge: Peace with Nature<\/a>, a challenge partnering MinecraftEdu with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/news\/building-planet-peace-nature-unesco-joins-minecrafts-latest-challenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">UNESCO<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intro Deck<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the video, to get students excited and curious about this year&#8217;s challenge, here is a slide deck that comes with the challenge for teachers to introduce it to students: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vQi1SRWBRH9dQmjTKw9yViTVuASDneoUkq-hvLAVBuL4Q1zj-Ccxa-zKPR0lR2bJsqTlZn_NAM3K6uB\/embed?start=false&amp;loop=false&amp;delayms=3000\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"1280\" height=\"500\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perfect Fit!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This topic fit so perfectly with our <a href=\"https:\/\/educatoral.com\/wordpress\/2017\/07\/15\/we-are-ocean-guardians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ocean Guardian School Environmental Stewardship Project <\/a>that I&#8217;m having students work on this while they are also working on our <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1U_Ao0nh_I2PZsJDq-P2BnQSSP0tmSmrrzQAnq7kzCeA\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HZAD Zombie Apocalypse health unit<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamificationschoolhouse.com\/product\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">adapted from here<\/a>)! Technically, we don&#8217;t start working on our environmental unit until March but in the fall and winter we trap fish and get water quality data so that by spring we can have data to analyze! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I teach two classes and I have each group two to three times a week for an entire day (I have each class every other Wednesday). Since I teach Math and Science, and with everything else that goes on like Music class, PE, Library, and garden time, kids get to spend the last hour of the day working this project. That means that they get two or three hours a week on this project. I will probably give them more time as the deadline approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Resources for Kids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When students first enter the world, there are five animals that &#8220;talk&#8221; to the players and introduce them to five different sustainability development problems. I was noticing that kids were reading what the animals had to say but they were skipping the resources to get more information. Teams were also beginning to build with no idea what problem they were solving and no new ideas of ways to solve their problems! Just letting them loose in the world did NOT work!
