The Thirteen Clues
These clues are being printed here right
from the Chimacum Park kiosk. There is a track found right here in the park
and another which is at the Pope Marine Park in Port Townsend. Those two
are easy to find but the remaining twelve are harder. Try and find any of
these you can, if you can, with your parents and take a picture of it.
Good luck!
The location of these tracks follow the
county's hydrologic cycle, as mentioned earlier, which is the way water
flows over, under and across the land. The study of the county's
watersheds using topological maps of the area show why water flows the way
it does. Basically, it's all about gravity.
The Clues:
1. The first track is north of Lion's Park on Indian Island embedded in
sedimentary rock at the water's edge.
2. The second track is at Port Townsend's North Beach, attached to a
boulder that mightly glaciars once moved.
3. The third track sits in the clouds, near a scenic lookout atop Mount
Walker.
4. The fourth track is often bathed by rain, located on a knoll near the
campground at Lake Leland.
5. The fifth track rests near one of the region's many rushing streams -
Snow Creek.
6. The sixth track is within on of the county's freshwater wetlands, a
quarter mile upstream on Chimacum Creek.
7. The seventh track is located at a campground on the river called
Dosewallips.
8. The eighth track is surrounded by soil water; in a field near the
Chinese Gardens in Port Townsend.
9. The ninth track lies next to a bubbling source of ground water, within
a grove of trees off Highway 104. Look for a single sentinel fir.
10. The tenth track can be found in an estuary, part of Oak Bay County
Park.
11. The eleventh track is near the high tide line of Puget Sound and Hood
Canal, at Point Hannon north of the Hood Canal Bridge.
12. The twelfth track is at Marrowstone Point in Fort Flagler State Park,
within view of open water. The heart of this track is at Ruby Beach on the
West End, where the land meets the sea.

- Jann Kaplinski
Ask your parents to take you on a search, maybe you can get the whole family
involved and make a nice day of it. If you find a track, try and get a
picture of it so that it can be scanned and put in this website along with
your story detailing how you found it. In your story, write about the
area where you found the track - especially how water flows.
