Mr. González' class, Block B (Day 1, 10:40 am - 12:20 pm)
Ms. Missig's class, Block D (Day 2, 10:40 am - 12:20 pm)
We are beginning the year preparing for Cispus and all of the science
activities that we are doing relate to what our 6th graders will be
learning at Cispus. As part of the science curriculum I will be integrating
math as often as possible because math and science go hand in hand, also
I want students to be able to read texts, magazines, internet articles,
and encyclopedia articles to get information and/or to do a research
project or prepare for a lab experiment. Also part of an integrated
science/technology unit, I will be teaching students how to make a web page
so they can publish reports on the Web!
Students will practice taking notes as part of this class as well, so
their reading and writing skills will be used and improved upon. If you
have any expertise in any of the following areas, please contact me about
coming in and doing a presentation. Throughout the year I will be making
lists of items that will help us do labs, so if you have anything lying
around to contribute, bring it to room 604!
I. Course Description/Overview
A. Scientific Method
1. Students will be engaged in activities where they will
learn how to work in small cooperative groups, problem
solve, collect data, and develop a hypothesis to test
through experimentation. This will be an ongoing
process.
B. Environment/Earth Sciences
1. Students will learn about watersheds, ponds, lakes, as
well as plate tectonics, volcanoes, rocks, minerals, and
natural resources.
a) Students will write a report on Mt. Saint Helens'
lava dome using the internet as their primary
source of research.
See our web pages!
C. Astronomy
1. We will take a small tour through our solar system and
study some of our neighboring planets in an effort to
learn more about our own planet.
See our Orbits Lab!
D. Biology
1. Students will be engaged in the study cell
biology and microbial life as well as the
animals they found in the pond at Cispus.
E. Physics
1. Students will study forces, motion, and heat in this
unit.
F. Chemistry
1. Finally, we will end the year with a look at the states
of matter and chemical reactions if time permits.
