Most
of the $14,112 from Year 1 (2003-2004) was spent
on the following (some geared towards water quality
and some geared towards outreach):
We started with a powerful enough computer to burn the kids'
movies onto DVD's! This is a Titanium Powerbook (Tibook)
G4 1.33 GHz with 2 GB RAM and an 80 GB hard drive capable
of holding all four classes' movies. The Tibook also has
a Super Drive to burn DVD's as well as CD's.
This was used to help film those documentary-style movies the
kids made.
Blank CD's and DVD's to burn our movies and pictures.
Cases for the CD's and DVD's.
A CD printer to print our own labels on our CD's and DVD's. I
also purchased five extra ink cartridges (black and color).
A projection device for the students to share what they learned
with each other.
Class set of ponchos for rainy weather (do we get that in the
Pacific Northwest?).
And of course, some
waders to keep dry while in the creek.
A GPS to share our exact location with the world.
An incubator to test the water for the presence of fecal coliform
bacteria.
Logger Pro software enough for
all the computers in my classroom for kids to
run data from our Vernier probes (purchased with
earlier grants).
This lovely little program allows
me to control all my students' computers, lock
them and see what they are doing. Nice!
We also got a pair
of binoculars, for on-site observations, and
an external DVD burner (which I have yet to figure
out how to get it to work with our Macs!).
The school got 400 MHz G4 eMacs for the students to make their
movies and edit them, create their websites and conduct their
research. We have 10 of these computers and each has 40 GB's
of hard drive space so that each class can make and store
their movies right on their own computer throughout the editing
process.
The school also got us an interactive whiteboard for our presentations
as well.
