Alderflies are typically found at low elevations in still or slow moving waters of streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, and marshes. They are active predators with long, curved, toothed mandibles.. They occur in wetland habitats but are rare in samples.

Sialid larvae have long, segmented gills on the sides of each abdominal segment and a plate covering the top of each thoracic segment. The abdomen ends in a single long tapering point.
