Anodonta
kennerlyi
(Western floater)
  The Western Floater’s range extends much further north than any of our other native mussel species.   It can be found from Oregon and Washington to the Arctic watershed.  It prefers the muddy or sandy bottoms of rivers and lakes at middle to high elevations.  Its host fish and reproductive biology are unknown.  The Western Floater  is under less stress overall because much of its range is in less developed northern regions, but it would be wise to use precaution and learn more about this species in order to prevent declines we have witnessed in populations of other Anodonta species.   Size: xlarge
Identifying feature(s):
the posterior part of the shell is not dramatically higher than the anterior part; the shell may curve in very slightly along the ventral edge because it is swollen more along the posterior ridge than in the middle and that posterior side may have a slightly raised ridge
Habitat:
soft-bottomed rivers, reservoirs and lakes
Tolerance:
moderate
