Margaritifera falcata
(western pearlshell) Shell is
fairly thick, jelly bean-shaped and very dark; besides growth rings,
no prominent ridges are present; empty shells have
purple (most) or pinkish-orange (around Klamath Lake) interior,
but may be white as shell wears after mussel dies.
Gonidea
angulata
(western ridged mussel) The shell is thick and
has a distinct ridge from the umbo to the farthest edge: this is a
distinctive feature that can even be used in worn shells and fragments;
inside of shell pearly white.
