January 18, 2021 LA Works hosted an incredible series of events in honor of this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Day of service. One of the events was a tour of Washington DC and Dr. King’s historic 1963 march to the Capitol, which ended with his awe-inspiring I Have A Dream speech in Minecraft! Pictured above is the Minecraft version of our country’s Capitol building! It was amazing being able to fly around with my Minecraft avatar and witness up close the amazing detail that was put into this building and the others in the tour. The world creators started working on the Minecraft Washington DC back in October of 2020 to be able to put together this fabulous event.
Tours were offered in two-hour blocks throughout the day. Zoom links were sent out the day before and in my session from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm PST there were about 60 participants! We were split into smaller groups and put into breakout rooms with two tour guides. There were 15 people in my breakout room and the tour guides were very kind and helpful. They allowed us to explore while also leading a tour. The tour ended with a spot for reflection and then an area for us to just build anything we wanted.
All throughout the Minecraft replica of Washington DC were avatars of civil rights leaders, including Dr. King of course, both past and present. Right clicking on the civil rights leaders made it so that we could read what they had to say! That was so cool! Here’s a video I recorded as I went through the tour and explored the world (it’s a long video so fast forward until you see something that interests you!).
It was such a fun way to visit Washington DC and to get to “see” the historic march on the Capitol without every leaving my house! Thanks to all those who put this on for us!
