A. González

Topic: Geology (Click here to see the rubric for this essay)
Concept: Properties of Earth Materials

Directions: A geologist is able to classify rocks and soils into groups. Geologists also need to understand the process involved in the formation of rocks and soils. A process known as the rock cycle forms the three types of rocks on this planet.

Your company is bidding for a project with a mining company. One section of the bid requires that you describe the rock cycle including the three types of rock found on planet earth. You must be able to identify each type of rock as well as show how soils are classified.

You will need to write a four to seven paragraph essay showing that you have the required knowledge to get the bid.

Students will also work as a team to create a PowerPoint presentation. The PowerPoint presentation will show why their team should be hired on with Rock Co, the mining company.

An effective writer may consider the following points:

- name the three types of rocks

- describe and/or draw each type of rock

- name two ways each type of rock can be identified

- show how soils are formed and classified

- describe the rock cycle,

  • describe how one rock type may become another
  • explain why the rock cycle is a cycle.

For your writing task, you will have the opportunity to follow all of the steps of the writing process: prewriting, writing a first draft, revising and editing your first draft, and writing a final draft.

Individually, you will write your own four-paragraph essay to Rock Co, the mining company to show that you understand the above concepts and can be hired on as lead geologist. As a team, your team will also create a PowerPoint presentation to present to the board of directors at Rock Co. In the presentation, you and your team will show that you understand the concepts above to get your team hired. You will use the following websites and the science textbook.
