Science

Monday - The people in charge of the Hood Canal Youth Summit on June 2 will pay for a bus to take us to the summit at Fort Flagler! They also will pay for a bus to take us down the west side of the canalhttp://hood.hctc.com/~hcwater/HCYS.html so that our students can test the water quality during the Snapshot of the Hood Canal week (4/11 - 4/18)!

Today we will concentrate on finishing our movies and websites!

HW - None

Tuesday - Today we will have Americorps Members visit to teach the kids about wetlands and macroinvertebrate identification! It was a blast! Students got to pick insects out of samples of marsh water and then they identified them using a dichotomous key. The lesson was ended with a great tag game that taught the kids how pollution gets the sensitive insects first leaving only the most tolerant insects in the water.

HW - None

Wednesday - Today kids will have time to fix their Water Quality Final Tests!

HW - None

Thursday - We will use today to make any finishing touches to our water quality movies and websites.

HW - None

Friday - Last chance to fix and complete water quality websites and movies! This is it!! (Maybe.)

HW - None

Future plans: This week we will score the websites and the movies! At the Hood Canal Youth Summit planning meeting that I attended Thursday night, I worked out a day for our students to take a field trip to the West side of the Hood Canal to test the water quality. The data we collect on that day, April 13, will be what students share at the youth summit on June 2. The people who are putting together the summit will pay for our bus on 4/12 and on 6/2!

Language Arts

Monday - Today we will study the trait of Word Choice by looking at the tone of vocabulary.

HW - Get your Reading Logs done, make-up any missing weeks by reading extra!

Tuesday - Today we will take a look at Word Choice by studying the use of Adjectives and the use of Imagery (we will see how similies and metaphors are not just used in poetry).

HW - None

Wednesday - Today we will finally score our Big6 research reports. Students will score the work of one or two other students looking at their Ideas, Organization and Word Choice (that's what we've been studying). Then I will read them all over Spring Break and see how well the kids scored each other.

HW - Get your Big6 research report done if you haven't written it already.

Thursday - During this time, I am going to give kids another chance to score a Big6 report and or get their Big6 scored by others. I will also offer their science tests so that they can finish correcting those if they didn't get a chance to finish yesterday.

I told kids yesterday that those who made me a deal to make up missing work when they got to go to on the Ballard Locks field trip, that if they flunk this quarter they will not be able to go on the water quality testing field trip on April 13. I can't in good conscience let kids go back on their deal to do their job as students in my class.

HW - You still have one more day to complete and submit your Big6 research report. Tomorrow is also your last chance to submit any third quarter Reading Logs.

Friday - Project Alert with Heidi Dodd.

HW - Have a relaxing and exciting Spring Break!

Future plans: This week we will score our Big6 research reports on the traits of Ideas, Organization, and Word Choice.
