The Victoria Field trip was awesome and went very well! Thank you parent chaperones, you made the trip possible! Last week I gave students an unofficial progress report so that they could get their grades up for midterm. Today I will pass out the official midterm progress reports! Copies of today's reports will be mailed out from the office later this week ONLY to those students who are flunking.

Since last week we were busy preparing for the Victoria Field trip I didn't have a chance to send any information home about Tuesday's water quality field trip. Information and permission slips will be coming home Monday evening. Please parents get those filled out so that we can leave on time Monday morning. If you can come, please join us! See period 1 at the very bottom for details.

Here is a list of the paperwork students were given today:

Hood Canal Youth Summit Papers:
1. All the data sheets (one for each of six sites)
2. Six Site Survey Data Forms (one for each site)
3. Team checklist
4. Each student has a letter with Reflection form
5. DO, pH and Temp have a packet explaining what is optimum for Hood Canal waters

HW - None

Thursday - Today I will show students how to make charts and graphs for their water quality data.

HW - None

Friday - Today is an early release and I won't be here because I'll be attending my last science conference of the year.

Today we will work on problem 3.1, p. 31.

HW - None

Future plans: We will work through Bits & Pieces I for the remainder of the year. If we can, we will finish it! :o)

Social Studies (3rd per)

Monday - Skipped SS today to prepare for tomorrow's field trip.

HW - None

Tuesday - Water quality field trip #2!

HW - None

Wednesday - Students were still working with their data and site survey forms.

HW - None

Thursday - Students will continue to work with their water quality data. We will need to print our charts and graphs so that students can make their posters for the Hood Canal Youth Summit.

HW - None

Friday - Canadian Vacation project Phase 2 continued. Individual students will finish filling out their self-assessment sheet.

Then teams will score their PowerPoint presentations together.

HW - None

Future plans: Ms. Langston and I are going to go through our notes and the students' work to determine how many Maple Leaf dollars they have earned during Phase 1 and 2 of the Canadian Vacation project. Then we will be ready to begin Phase 3 where student teams will be families planning a two-week vacation to Canada!

Science (5th per)

Monday - I will give students some time today to prepare their lessons (last week each table was assigned different reading selections from our science textbook and students are working together to teach their topic to the class).

Once table teams are finished preparing their lessons, students will have time to do any missing labs or work. I gave them time last week to work on missing assignments but only a few students actually worked (many were just socializing). I'll try again today but this might be the last time I give students a chance like this if they will not use it. I told them that they were given a gift and that they did not make use of it. Well, I hope that they are working hard at home to make up the work they are not doing in class (see the progress report to find out what your child is missing).

HW - Reading log for week 4 and any missing work from all classes.

Tuesday - Water quality field trip #2!

HW - None

Wednesday - Table teams will start presenting their lessons to teach the class their topics.

Tables 2/3, 6/7 and 1/10 taught their reading sections today.

HW - None

Thursday - Project Alert with Heidi Dodd. This might very well be the last one!

Then tables 8/9 and 4/5 will teach their reading section.

HW - TBD and Reading log for week 4.

Friday - No science today due to early release schedule.

HW - None

Future plans: We are almost done with the first third of this unit, Energy. We will work through lessons 7, 8 and maybe 9 this week. Lesson 11 will mark the beginning of the Machines section of this unit.

Language Arts (6th per)

We are still blocking these two periods and combining Language Arts with Science. This week students will use their specific reading selections (by table) to teach the class their topic.

Reading logs are still due every Friday, which means that all students are still expected to read daily at home for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes. I give students a copy of the  Reading log every Monday or at the latest Tuesday.

Future plans: We will practice and review reading strategies as we read through the science textbooks together. Students are also writing daily during this time as they plan and design their labs and then write-up their labs. Students are also answering questions from the textbook using the data they collect in the form of data tables and graphs.

Exploratory - 1st period

Monday - This morning students will take time to check their water quality kits and make sure they have everything they need for tomorrow's field trip.

Probes teams will check and make sure their palm pilots are working and their probes are working.

I have an agenda for the Youth Summit and the morning will be incredible presentations. I will give student teams a list of the presentations to let them choose which ones most interest them (the sooner we get those choices in the more likely our students will get their first or second choice!).

Students also need to check their websites and make sure they are ready for uploading and they also need to check their movies and cut out much of what isn't needed so that our presentation at the Youth Summit won't be so long.

HW - Students will be bringing home a packet of papers for you to read and sign. Please go ahead and fill out the permission slip for tomorrow's field trip! If you do this on time then we won't be late and your child won't be bugging you calling at 7:30am :o)

Please have your child bring a sack lunch since we won't be at school for lunch tomorrow, Tuesday, May 17! Thank you.

I also enclosed the June 2nd Youth Summit permission slip to save you the trouble of having to do this again in a few weeks.

The last permission slip is from the Youth Summit people, the Hood Canal Water Project people. Please read it carefully as it has a release at the bottom where you can sign to allow pictures and or film footage, taken at the time of the Youth Summit, to be used by the State of Washington and the Neighbors of the Hood Canal. The pictures and footage might be used to show how students are benefiting from this project, and how the Hood Canal is benefiting from this project so that they can get future funding. Future funding will allow more students to participate in real science that helps the Hood Canal watershed, which is in real danger.

Tuesday - We will prepare for today's field trip!

Wednesday - We spent all morning preparing for the Hood Canal Youth Summit.

HW - None
