The genus Juga is common and often abundant; usually reddish-brown with well-developed cone-shaped shell that may have ridges; tiny to quite large.
 
       
  Hydrobiidae
shell globose (almost spherical) or conical; generally, shell either < 6 mm or (if slightly larger) globose in shape
 
       
  Valvatidae
coil of the shell is mostly or completely flattened; opening is usually circular
   
       
  Thiaridae (introduced) similar to Pleuroceridae; shell is usually long, fairly thin cone, may have grainy texture; introduced into southeast OR, ID, southwest MT, and the Southwest
